Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the Dan Jeon Breathing Technique to reduce perimenstrual discomfort. This study was a quasi-experimental study, designed to measure discomfort before and after with a non-equivalent control group and an experiment group. The study was carried out from April 6 through July 30 1999, with 56 women picked at conveniently from two ¢¥M¢¥(Chi, in chinese) centers, a university, a church and an academic center in Seoul. The instrument for measuring perimenstrual discomfort was modified Moos¢¥s MDQ(Menstrual Distress Que- stionnaire) tool. The goal of the Dan Jeon breathing technique is try to get biological oriental energy, which is "Ki" from the Universe (Yin and Yang principle). to increase blood circulation and increase stabilization of the emotions. The training takes four weeks every day except sundays. The training takes eighty minutes a day. The 28-member experimental group, who received training in the Dan Jeon breathing technique, had their perime- nstrual discomfort measured before and after training. The 28-member control group also, had their perimenstrual discomfort measured at the same times.
The collected data were analyzed by means of the x 2 - test and the t-test in order to test the differences between the two groups. The paired t-test was used to test six hypotheses regarding the effects of the Dan Jeon breathing technique.
The results of the study were as follows 1. The first hypothesis that the pain experienced by the group who was given training in the Dan Jeon bre- athing technique would be less than the pain experienced by the control group who did not receive training in the Dan Jeon breathing technique, was supported. 2. The second hypothesis that the experimental group who was given training in the :Dan Jeon breathing technique would have better concen- tration than the control group who was not given training in the Dan Jeon breathing technique, was supported. 3. The third hypothesis, that auto- nomic nerve reaction of the experime- ntal group who used the Dan Jeon breathing technique would be more emotional stabilized than the control group who didn¢¥t use it, was supported. 4. The fourth hypothesis, that the scope and frequency of the activities of the experimental group who used the Dan Jeon breathing technique would be more than the control group who didn¢¥t use the Dan Jeonbreathing technique, was supported. 5. The fifth hypothesis, that water retention of the experimental group who used the Dan Jeon breathing technique would be less than that of the control group who didn¢¥t use the Dan Jeon breathing technique. was supported. 6. The sixth hypothesis, that negative perception and emotional reaction of the experimental group who used the Dan Jeon breathing technique would be less than the control group who didn¢¥t the Dan Jeon breathing technique, was supported. The study¢¥s results proved that the Dan Jeon breathing technique was an effective therapy to reduce perimenstrual discomfort. Hence, the Dan Jeon breathing technique may be an independent ;cursing intervention to use with clients ext eriencing perimenstrual discomfort.
